Photosynthesis to Produce Liquid Fuel – Really?

Is it really possible to produce liquid fuels to replace petroleum diesel and gasoline, cost effectively without consuming large amounts of biomass like corn? A company called Joule Unlimited has just raised $70 million dollars to commercialize its technology and prove that it can produce fuel in large quantities very cost effectively.  This technology uses water, carbon dioxide and micro-organisms combined with the energy of the sun to drive photosynthesis converting the carbon dioxide to fuel
